Hometown Hero Program FAQS

  • How do we get started?

The most difficult part of the Local Heroes Projects is the promoting and collection of the Heroes to be displayed on the banners. Many municipalities will partner with the local VFW or American Legion Posts, Boy Scouts and other civic and social organizations to help spread the word. The first group to be displayed on the Local Heroes Banners is the most difficult to collect, because it requires a commitment from everyone in the community. Once the first set of banners are installed, everyone will want a banner for their Hero and the project will take off and continue for many years.

  • How can DDI help?

We created a “Sample – Local Hero – Application” as a way to collect the important information about each Hero so it can be stored in one place. For recognition and readability purposes, we try to limit the information on the banner to include the Hero’s Photo, Name, Rank and Branch of Service. If space permits, we can add Era of Service or a Special Recognition. The form also includes space for Contact Information for the Hero’s Sponsor or Family Member as you will want to contact them to verify the banner proof before production. This form is not a requirement, more a suggestion to make things easier. Please change the form to show the information and requirements that your group designates as important for this project.

  • What fabric is available?

The “Heroes Banners” will be made as a Digital Print (CMYK). We offer 2 options for fabric for the banners to be produced on either 18oz Vinyl fabric, for short term use of the banners(1 year). The other option for producing banner on is “Custom Coated Mainstreet Fabric” which is for more long-term use of 2-3 years.

  • How to Select a Size & Template

The size and template limit the amount of information on the banner. The most important thing for each banner is that the Hero can be recognized (seen) and read about by the Hero’s family, friends and passersby. Choose a template that we have or we can work with you to create your own design. The suggested banner size will depend upon the size of the lighting poles they are going on. The other option would be to match the size of your existing banner and hardware already in place.

  • What should we include on the design?

All banners are printed on both sides. You can elect to include whatever information you choose for each Veteran., We will try to accommodate the family and include what we can, given the banner size. Remember that “Less is More” and it’s typically best to stick with Name, Rank, Branch of Service, and Era of Service. We can also add a few medals if requested – Purple Heart, Silver Star and Bronze Star. We do not provide any others, as it’s too difficult finding suitable artwork. Less is more would be nice to emphasize to your customers, along with suggesting abbreviating ranks and middle initial to save space/making the name bigger.

  • Photo Tips

We find that if you send your pictures over in JPEG format , it works best for us. We strive 300 DPI at full size, we do try and clean up the photos as much as possible.
